| Saxony-Anhalt is the
8th biggest German region located in the Eastern part of Germany with borders with Brandenburg, Thuringia, Saxony and Lower Saxony. The capital city is Magdeburg and the biggest city is Halle/ Saale (240.077 inhabitants). The location Saxony-Anhalt offers attractive conditions to investors. In the middle of Europe, the region has well developed rail, motorway and waterway systems that provide optimal access to markets and suppliers. Investors profit from well established research and educational structures like universities, colleges and other research institutions. The main characteristic of Saxony-Anhalt is the development pattern of the process of transformation from socialist economy to market economy after the unification of Germany. This process influenced in particular the chemical industry. The general economic restructuring has successfully managed to diversify the mono-structures in the former chemical region and led to the establishment of a modern infrastructure and new settlements of small and medium sized enterprises. Today, the development of the chemical industry in Saxony-Anhalt is a success story. The Lead Participant in the ChemSME project; the local government of the district Merseburg-Querfurt, located in the South of Saxony-Anhalt represents 9 cities and 34 communities with ca. 132.634 inhabitants. Due to the favourable location in the neighbourhood of the cities Halle and Leipzig and the excellent connections to national and European transport networks, numerous international chemical enterprises, suppliers and chemical processors have located in the region. With the University for Applied Research in Merseburg, Research Institutes, the Merseburg Innovation and Technology Centre and the Europe-wide unique Fraunhofer Pilot Plant Centre for Polymer Synthesis and Processing the district offers outstanding scientific potentials and highly qualified human capital.
